0 Heidenheim vs 1 RB Leipzig
RB Leipzig face Heidenheim after UCL defeat to Juventus.
In a clash of contrasting fortunes, FC Heidenheim aim to extend their European momentum against a resilient RB Leipzig side eager to bounce back from Champions League disappointment at the Voith-Arena.
Heidenheim
Heidenheim celebrated their inaugural European appearance with a 2-1 victory against Olimpija Ljubljana in the Europa Conference League on Thursday. Frank Schmidt’s side took an early lead courtesy of Adrian Beck in the 6th minute but were pegged back 13 minutes from time.
Just when it looked like Heidenheim would settle for a draw, Paul Wanner scored a late goal in the 83rd minute to hand the German side the historic win. “We reacted well after the equaliser,” Schmidt told reporters.
With Thursday’s win, Heidenheim recorded back-to-back victories in all competitions, including a 2-0 league victory over Mainz last weekend, placing them in 6th position, one point behind fifth-placed Dortmund. FCH will now look to continue this impressive run when they welcome Leipzig this weekend.
However, the hosts have only won one of their eight games against RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga, Bundesliga 2, and the 3. Liga (1W, 3D, 4L), with a 1-0 home win in March 2015 in the second division. Interestingly, Heidenheim hasn’t scored more than once in any of the eight meetings, and their only clean sheet against RBL came in that sole win.
A 4–2–3–1 formation could be seen this weekend, with Marvin Pieringer in attack. Meanwhile, Niklas Dorsch is suspended for this clash after receiving a red card against ten-man Mainz.
RB Leipzig
Meanwhile, Leipzig are coming off a disappointing 3-2 loss to Juventus in the UEFA Champions League. Marco Rose's men failed to capitalize on their numerical advantage, despite regaining the lead through Benjamin Šeško, who completed his brace with goals in the 30th and 65th minutes, the latter coming from a penalty.
However, a brace from Dušan Vlahović and a late goal by Sérgio Conceição turned the game on its head, resulting in back-to-back UCL losses for the Red Bulls. "It's a tough lesson, but we have to make sure we do learn from tonight," Rose said after the match. He added, "We have to be ready on Sunday for the difficult game in Heidenheim, even though the way we lost is still emotionally present."
While Leipzig has suffered defeats in both of their UCL fixtures, a 4-0 victory over Augsburg last weekend extended their unbeaten league run to 16 games, the longest ongoing streak in the top flight and a new club record. This surpasses their previous 15-game streak under Ralf Rangnick from January to May 2019.
Having achieved a double over Heidenheim last season, Leipzig aim for a third consecutive league victory over them this weekend. The team, currently in third place [WWDDW], sits just one point behind second-place Frankfurt. A 4-4-2 formation is expected, with Loïs Openda and Šeško leading the attack.
