RB Leipzig face Heidenheim after UCL defeat to Juventus.

As FC Heidenheim revel in their recent European triumph, they brace themselves to host RB Leipzig, who aim to extend their record-breaking unbeaten league run and overcome the emotional weight of consecutive Champions League defeats.

Heidenheim

Heidenheim celebrated their inaugural European appearance with a 2-1 victory against Olimpija Ljubljana in the Europa Conference League on Thursday. Frank Schmidt’s side took an early lead courtesy of Adrian Beck [6’] but were pegged back 13 minutes from time. Just when it looked like Heidenheim would settle for a draw, Paul Wanner [83’] scored a late goal to hand the German side the historic win. ‘We reacted well after the equaliser,' Schmidt told reporters.

With Thursday’s win, Heidenheim recorded back-to-back victories in all competitions, including a 2-0 league victory over Mainz last weekend, placing them in 6th position, one point behind fifth-placed Dortmund. FCH [WWLLW] will now look to continue with this impressive run when they welcome Leipzig this weekend.

However, the hosts have only won one of their eight games against RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga, Bundesliga 2, and the 3. Liga [1W, 3D, 4L], 1-0 at home in March 2015 in the second division. Interestingly, Heidenheim haven’t scored more than once in any of the eight meetings, and their only clean sheet against RBL came in that sole win.

A 4–2–3–1 formation could be seen this weekend, with Marvin Pieringer in attack. Meanwhile, Niklas Dorsch is suspended for this clash after receiving a red card against ten-man Mainz.

RB Leipzig

Meanwhile, Leipzig are coming off a disappointing 3-2 loss to Juventus in the UEFA Champions League. Marco Rose’s men failed to make their numerical advantage count, despite regaining the lead through Benjamin Šeško, who completed his brace from the spot.

Dušan Vlahović’s brace and a goal from Sérgio Conceição turned the game on its head, handing the Red Bulls back-to-back UCL losses. "It's a tough lesson, but we have to make sure we do learn from tonight," Rose said after the loss.

"We have to be ready on Sunday for the difficult game in Heidenheim, even though the way we lost is still emotionally present," he added. Despite setbacks in the UCL, Leipzig recently achieved a resounding 4-0 victory over Augsburg, extending their unbeaten league run to 16 games, the longest active streak in the top flight.

This run also marks a new club record, surpassing their previous best under Ralf Rangnick. Having achieved a double over Heidenheim last season, Leipzig will aim for a third consecutive league win over FCH this weekend.

Leipzig, reflecting form of [WWDDW], currently sits in third place, one point behind second-place Frankfurt. A 4–4–2 formation is expected, with Loïs Openda and Šeško leading the attack.
