Empoli plotting final-day relegation escape in permutation-packed Roma clash.

In a nerve-wracking season finale, relegation-threatened Empoli host Roma at Stadio Carlo Castellani, hoping for a miracle to secure their Serie A survival.

Empoli

Empoli are winless in their last four matches [WLDLD], after settling for a 1-1 draw with Udinese last time out. Both goals in that game were scored from the spot inside stoppage time.

Davide Nicola's side are in 18th place with 33 points [8W, 9D, & 20L], just one point from safety heading into the final day of the season. Empoli are fighting for survival and will be relegated if they lose.

The hosts will also be relegated if they draw and Udinese avoid defeat by an unlikely 10-goal margin. However, Serie A safety will be guaranteed if Empoli picks up an unlikely three-goal win over Roma, provided the relegation battle between 16th-placed Frosinone [35 points] and 17th-placed Udinese [34 points] ends in a draw.

If the Blues pull off a miraculous escape, it will be the first time they stay in the top-flight for three straight seasons. Empoli have earned seven points in their last three home matches, keeping a clean sheet in the last two.

However, the last time the hosts beat Roma at home was in 2007. A 3—5—2 formation with Matteo Cancellieri and Alberto Cerri in attack is expected for this clash.

Meanwhile, Alberto Grassi [R. 90’+15] was sent off in the draw with Udinese and will miss Sunday's season finale.

Roma

Roma ended a three-match winless streak with a 1-0 victory over Genoa, thanks to a goal from Romelu Lukaku in the 79th minute.

The Giallorossi have 63 points, achieved through 18 wins, 9 draws, and 10 losses, and are currently in 6th place ahead of their trip to Empoli. Roma, who finished in 6th place last season, could settle for the same spot once again.

Participation in a European competition of choice appears to be out of their control. If newly-crowned Europa League champions Atalanta finish in 5th place, Roma will be playing in the UEFA Champions League next season, as Italy has five qualifying UCL spots. However, if Atalanta finishes above 5th place, the visitors will be playing in the UEFA Europa League next season.

Lukaku is suspended due to an accumulation of yellow cards, and this might see Tammy Abraham spearhead the attack in a 4-3-2-1 formation on Sunday. Daniele De Rossi, who is expected to sign a new contract until 2027, will also be without Leandro Paredes, who was sent off in the match against Genoa.
