'We’re ready,' Hoffenheim boss Matarazzo says ahead of Frankfurt clash.
Eintracht Frankfurt look to shake off their opening defeat as they host a confident TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, aiming for a rare back-to-back Bundesliga win, at Deutsche Bank Park this Saturday.
Eintracht Frankfurt
Frankfurt began their 2024-2025 Bundesliga season with a 2-0 loss to Borussia Dortmund at the Westfalenstadion. Farès Chaibi missed a significant scoring opportunity, which proved costly as Jamie Bynoe-Gittens scored for Dortmund less than a minute later in the 72nd minute. Moments later, Bynoe-Gittens secured a brace during stoppage time in the 90+3 minute.
With this defeat, Dino Toppmöller's team is currently in the 17th place, just above the newcomers St. Pauli, who share the same goal difference. This weekend, Die Adler will face Hoffenheim, hoping to recover from their initial defeat as they look for their first league victory of the season.
Frankfurt has a strong track record against Hoffenheim, winning nine of the last twelve encounters, more than against any other team since the 2018/2019 season began. Additionally, they remain unbeaten in their last eight home games against Saturday's opponents.
The Eagles have not lost their opening two matches in a top-flight campaign since 2013/14, a record they aim to maintain. However, they have only secured one victory in their last ten league games. Toppmöller is expected to use the familiar 4—2—3—1 formation, with Hugo Ekitike leading the attack.
TSG Hoffenheim
Andrej Kramarić was the star of the day as the Croatian secured a hat-trick (6' P., 37', 87') to help Hoffenheim achieve a 3-2 victory over Bundesliga newcomers Holstein Kiel. Being one of the seven teams to record a win on matchday one, Pellegrino Matarazzo’s side is currently in sixth place on the table, just behind fifth-placed Bayern Munich, with the same goal difference.
Although Die Kraichgauer celebrated their first opening league win in three years, they have only managed to start a Bundesliga campaign with back-to-back wins once (2020/21) in thirteen years. They will be looking to break this jinx when they travel to Frankfurt this weekend.
"It’s a great challenge. Frankfurt is a good team. The stadium is also capable of pushing the team forward. To survive there, it’s all about our unity. We’re ready to tackle the game, the boys are excited too. We can get started," Matarazzo stated in a pre-match press conference.
Despite recent struggles against the hosts, Hoffenheim will be hoping to return as happy travellers, especially given Frankfurt's poor form, having lost three of their last five league games. Adam Hložek, Marius Bülter, and matchday one's hero Kramarić are expected to start in attack when Matarazzo deploys the 4—3—3 formation.
