Girona looking to tighten grip on second place in trip to Alaves.
Alavés, fresh from a thrilling win in Valencia, host second-place Girona at Mendizorrotza on Friday evening, aiming to keep their winning streak alive and break into the top half of the table.
Deportivo Alavés
Alaves extended their winning streak to three games in a row after last weekend’s 1-0 win over Valencia. Despite a host of clear-cut chances at both ends, only a single goal from left-back Javi López, scored in the 68th minute, separated both sides at full-time at the Mestalla.
The win not only kept Alaves in 11th place but also brought them within two points of 10th-place Getafe, who have 43 points after losing 0-2 to nine-man Athletic Club at the weekend. Following last weekend's win on the road, Alaves now have 41 points from 11 wins, 8 draws, and 15 losses.
Friday’s game could see El Glorioso move into the upper half of the table, assuming they can earn another clean sheet while hitting the back of the net against Girona. The hosts have kept a clean sheet in all three previous victories but have never won four straight games in top-flight history.
On Friday, they will be looking to break this jinx in what will be their sixth meeting against Girona in La Liga. A finish in the upper half of the table would be an unprecedented achievement for the side that earned promotion via the play-offs after finishing 4th in the Segunda División.
Manager Luis García Plaza is expected to maintain the 4-2-3-1 formation with Kike García in attack, while Samu Omorodion remains suspended.
Girona
A comeback 4-2 win over Barcelona not only sealed a spot in the next edition of the UEFA Champions League but also moved Girona into second place as favorites to finish as runners-up behind newly crowned champions Real Madrid.
With a top-four finish now guaranteed, it was the club's maiden UCL qualification in its 94-year history. On Friday, they will be looking to tighten their grip on second place by picking up four wins in a row, having won the last three.
A win here would leave Girona with 74 points, securing a league double over the hosts following their 3-0 win in the reverse fixture this season back in December. However, Girona have won just two of their 13 away games against Alavés across all competitions.
Míchel will have no reason to alter the 4-2-3-1 formation seen against Barcelona, with Artem Dovbyk in attack. After a brace and an assist off the bench, Portu might start the game here.
