Palace take on West Ham in Saturday's London derby.
Crystal Palace hosts West Ham at Selhurst Park this Saturday in a crucial London derby, with both teams eager to bounce back from opening defeats and continue their goal-filled encounters.
Crystal Palace
Palace failed to get off to a winning start despite drawing level three minutes before the hour mark in last weekend’s opener against Brentford, where they lost 2-1. An own goal from Ethan Pinnock [57’ O.G.] brought them level after a fabulous left-footed curler from Bryan Mbeumo [29’] put Brentford ahead.
However, Yoane Wissa [76’] tucked the ball in from close range after Dean Henderson failed to deal with a shot on goal, handing the Bees the win. Oliver Glasner, who was not pleased to have seen Eze’s goal ruled out, was left impressed with his side’s performance on the pitch despite the disappointing result.
On Saturday, he will be hoping his side can grind out a result on home soil when they welcome West Ham, whom they have defeated in the last two meetings at home. Victory here would leave Palace with five home wins in a row, having won their last four Premier League home games in the past season.
Ivan Toney was expected to take part in last weekend’s opener, but Thomas Frank decided to leave the 28-year-old, who is subject to an imminent exit, out of the squad entirely. It remains likely he will play no part in Saturday’s clash when Glasner heads out with the familiar 3-4-2-1 formation, leaving Jean-Philippe Mateta in attack.
West Ham United
Just like Palace, West Ham also began the new season with a 2-1 loss to Aston Villa after drawing level at some point. Lucas Paqueta [37’ P.] converted from the penalty spot after a tangle in the box, but it was Jhon Durán [79’] who became West Ham’s nemesis after seeing a deal to make the switch to West Ham fall through.
The 20-year-old Colombian came off the bench to condemn the Hammers to their first defeat of the season. Although West Ham lost their last three Premier League games against fellow London sides in the past season, they would be keen to earn their maiden win of the season on Saturday against the Eagles in this London Derby.
Onlookers could see another goal fest, with the last four meetings between both sides producing as many as 24 goals, 13 for the hosts and 11 for Julen Lopetegui’s side. With defeat on his first day on the job, Lopetegui will certainly be anxious to win the home crowd over this weekend.
A 4—1—4—1 formation with new arrival Niclas Füllkrug, who made his debut against Villa, in attack, is anticipated for Saturday’s clash.
