Clermont in desperate race for top-flight survival as Lyon visits.

Clermont Foot face a pivotal showdown against Lyon at Stade Gabriel Montpied on Sunday, as they fight to keep their top-flight hopes alive with just two games left.

Clermont

Relegation-threatened Clermont are only four points shy of potential safety ahead of Sunday’s game against Lyon. The Lancers currently sit at the bottom of the table with 25 points (5W, 10D, and 17L) ahead of the weekend's affair.

Clermont have an unlikely chance of catching FC Metz, who are four points ahead in the play-off spot. For this to happen, Metz will have to lose against Strasbourg and PSG, while Clermont must beat Lyon and 17th-placed Lorient on the final day, hoping the latter suffer a defeat this weekend against Marseille.

Last weekend, the Lancers lost 4-1 to Monaco, leaving them with 21 fewer points after 32 matches compared to last season, when they had 46 points at this stage. Pascal Gastien's side will be hoping to avoid successive defeats (DDLWL) when they host Lyon on Sunday, focusing on their slim 6% chance to reach the playoffs, according to the Opta Predictor.

A run of three wins in a row against the visitors could serve as a source of motivation ahead of Sunday's game. Additionally, they have picked up seven points from their last four L1 home games, as many as in their first 12.

Grejohn Kyei is expected to remain at the top of the 4-2-3-1 formation for this clash against Lyon. Jim Allevinah (concussion) is hoping to make a full recovery, while Maxime Gonalons and Cheick Oumar Konate remain sidelined.

Olympique Lyonnais

Lyon put up a brilliant second-half display in a 4-3 comeback victory over Lille last Monday. This victory was the second for Les Gones [WWLWW].

It leaves them in 7th place on the Ligue 1 table, having amassed 47 points [14W, 5D, & 13L].

Lyon are on a fine run, having picked up 31 points [10W, 1D, 4L] in 2024, more than any other side in Ligue 1. A finish in European places remains the objective for Lyon as they head into the weekend’s game, where they hope to pick up three wins in a row.

However, OL could be left with a four-game losing run to Clermont Foot on Sunday, following a recent run of torrid form against the home side. A 4—3—3 with Ernest Nuamah and Saïd Benrahma on either side of Alexandre Lacazette in attack is expected from Pierre Sage against Clermont.

Nicolás Tagliafico is in doubt for the weekend’s game. Mama Baldé and Malick Fofana could get in from the get-go against Clermont following an impressive performance against Lille.
