Celtic begins UCL campaign against debutants Slovan Bratislava.
As Celtic welcome Slovan Bratislava to Celtic Park for their UEFA Champions League debut, former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers aims to continue his side's flawless home record against Slovakian teams, while the visitors seek an elusive victory on British soil.
Celtic
Celtic’s third consecutive appearance in the UEFA Champions League will have them facing Slovan Bratislava, who are making their debut in the competition alongside four others. This marks only the second time the Scottish side has featured for three consecutive campaigns in the competition.
Currently in their 13th appearance overall, the Scottish champions picked up maximum points from their first five league fixtures, most recently securing a 2-0 home victory over Hearts. This win placed Celtic at the top of the league, level on points with Aberdeen.
Going into Wednesday’s UCL fixture, Celtic has faced Slovakian opposition only four times. The Bhoys have won all three of their home games against Slovakian clubs without conceding a goal.
They aim to achieve another home win to advance to the round of 16 for the first time since the 2012/13 season. For this opening matchday clash, former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers will focus solely on securing victory by using the 4-3-3 formation.
Nicolas Kühn and Daizen Maeda are likely to team up with Kyogo Furuhashi in attack. However, Maik Nawrocki remains in doubt due to fitness concerns.
Slovan Bratislava
Twenty-two-time Slovak Liga champions Slovan Bratislava will arrive in Glasgow full of confidence after a strong start to their domestic campaign. They currently sit atop their league with 15 points from a possible 18, following a dramatic 2-1 victory over Dunajská Streda in their most recent outing, courtesy of a late Tigran Barseghyan penalty [89' P].
Meanwhile, the visitors will be making their UCL debut alongside the likes of Aston Villa, Girona, Ligue 1 side Brest, and Serie A side Bologna. Nevertheless, Slovan’s manager will be optimistic about his side’s chances of reaching the next round of the competition.
This will be the Sky Blues’ first game against a Scottish team since their 1969 European Cup Winners’ Cup semi-final win over Dunfermline Athletic. Slovan won that fixture 2-1 on aggregate, drawing 1-1 away before winning 1-0 at home, only to fall to Barcelona in the final.
While they may be rusty against British opposition on European soil, with their last win against such sides coming in September 1975 against Derby County [1-0], the visitors will be looking to get off to a debut win. For this match, Slovan Bratislava’s manager Vladimír Weiss is expected to opt for a 4—2—3—1 with David Strelec leading the line in attack.
