Torino in trip to Cagliari without injured Duván Zapata.
As Cagliari look to capitalize on a spirited resurgence to climb Serie A's standings, they host a struggling yet resilient Torino squad at Sardegna Arena, setting the stage for an intriguing clash this Sunday.
Cagliari
After a rocky start to their league campaign, with two draws followed by three consecutive losses, Cagliari appears to be turning a corner. The Islanders have picked up four points in their last two league games [LLLWD], including a 3-2 win against Parma, followed by a 1-1 away draw against Juventus before the international break.
Cagliari fell behind early in the game following a controversial call that saw a spot kick awarded to Juve after Dušan Vlahović's header struck Sebastiano Luperto's arm. However, the Islanders got their own slice of fortune late in the game, following a mistimed tackle from Douglas Luiz. Răzvan Marin [88’ P.] then converted from the spot to secure a hard-fought point for Davide Nicola's men.
'From a technical point of view, I'm not convinced by the decision to award such a penalty,’ Nicola told reporters, questioning the decision behind Juve's penalty. Despite gaining a point, Cagliari remained in 16th place.
The Sardinians will now reconvene in front of their home crowd against Torino this weekend, looking to secure maximum points in a bid to move up the standings. However, their struggles in the final third cast doubt on their abilities to do so this Sunday, having failed to score in four of their seven Serie A games this season.
Roberto Piccoli could start in attack once again in a 4—2—3—1. Meanwhile, Adam Obert, who withdrew from the Slovakian squad during the international break, is ruled out for Sunday's clash.
Torino
A 3-2 defeat against Inter Milan last time out marked back-to-back league losses for Torino. Paolo Vanoli’s men mounted a spirited fightback despite playing much of the game with 10 men after Guillermo Maripán’s 20th-minute red card for a challenge on Marcus Thuram.
However, Duván Zapata’s strike and a goal from Nikola Vlašić only served as consolation. Vanoli was direct in his criticism, stating, ‘A player of his experience cannot make a mistake like that,’ regarding the costly tackle by the 30-year-old defender.
Torino dropped to seventh place, and the loss to Inter brought further setbacks, as Zapata was stretchered off and has been ruled out for the season due to an ACL injury. Despite their star striker’s absence, Torino will aim to secure maximum points against Cagliari, buoyed by an impressive away record with five wins in their last eight league games on the road.
Antonio Sanabria could replace the injured Zapata in attack alongside Che Adams in Vanoli’s 3-5-2 formation. This tactical change may shape Torino's strategy as they look to maintain their strong away performance.
