Manchester United in two-horse race for 7th place.
After a narrow loss to Chelsea, Brighton aim to secure a top-half finish against a Manchester United side looking to build momentum ahead of their FA Cup final.
Brighton & Hove Albion
After the midweek 2-1 loss to ten-man Chelsea, Brighton were left with a possible best 10th-place finish. The Seagulls conceded four minutes after the half-hour mark after a fabulous header from Cole Palmer rattled the back of the net.
Another Chelsea goal from Christopher Nkunku left Brighton with a two-goal deficit before a spirited fightback late in the game helped the Seagulls to a Danny Welbeck goal. It was the third defeat in five games for Brighton, who have 48 points.
With 13th-place Wolves adrift by two points, Brighton could be knocked out of 10th place if they fail to earn a win here. Brighton have won each of their last four Premier League games against Manchester United, however, the hosts have lost their final game in four of their six Premier League campaigns.
Roberto De Zerbi is expected to keep the midweek’s 4—2—3—1 formation with Danny Welbeck in attack for this weekend's clash. Blighted by injuries, a lengthy list leaves as many as eleven players, including Pervis Estupiñán and Kaoru Mitoma, on the treatment table for Brighton.
Manchester United
A midweek 3-2 win over Newcastle helped Manchester United remain in the two-horse race for a seventh-place finish. The Red Devils are 8th on the Premier League table with 57 points [17W, 6D, & 14L] ahead of the final day of the season, where they hope to pick up back-to-back victories [WDLLW].
However, Manchester United have lost four of their six Premier League away games against Brighton, amounting to a 67% loss rate. It remains their highest loss rate away against any side in the competition.
Furthermore, Manchester United have lost their final league game in two of the last five seasons [3W, 1D, 2L]. This is as many times as they had in the previous 33 campaigns [23W, 8D, 2L].
United will see Sunday’s season finale as a litmus test of their readiness ahead of the FA Cup final against Manchester City scheduled for May 25. '’First, we travel to Brighton, where we go for three points, and then we go to Wembley. And I promise you that those players will give everything - everything - to get that cup and bring it back to Old Trafford,'' Erik ten Hag said after the midweek win.
Ten Hag is expected to deploy the familiar 4—2—3—1 formation with Rasmus Højlund in attack. United will be without as many as five players for the final game of the season.
