Saint-Étienne in trip to Francis-Le Blé against Brest.

In a clash of early strugglers, Stade Brestois 29 aim to break their winless start and maintain their strong home record against a Saint-Étienne side hungry for their first goals and points of the season.

Brest

Brest, the surprise package of the previous season, are facing a tough start to the new campaign after recent disappointing outings. A 5-1 loss to Marseille on the opening day was followed by a 2-0 defeat to Lens on Match Day 2, leaving them at the bottom of the Ligue 1 table with no points and the worst goal difference among the teams without a win.

Manager Eric Roy has expressed his disappointment with his players after a poor start to the season. “The players need to acknowledge their current level, and they all need to take a look at themselves,” he said.

A loss to Saint-Étienne on Match Day 3 would see Brest, for only the second time in club history, suffer three opening defeats. Despite their current struggles, Brest could extend their strong record against Saint-Étienne, having lost just one of the six L1 meetings since returning to the top flight in 2019-20.

In addition, they have won their last three home games against the visitors and could secure four consecutive home wins against Saint-Étienne in L1 for only the second time, a feat last achieved between 1982 and 1988. However, the hosts have struggled at home recently, going winless in their last four L1 home matches and picking up just as many defeats in their previous 20 games.

Roy is expected to deploy a 4-3-3 formation with Romain Faivre, Ludovic Ajorque, and Romain Del Castillo in attack, though Abdoulaye Ndiaye will be unavailable due to suspension.

Saint-Étienne

Like the hosts, newly promoted Saint-Étienne have also faced challenges, losing their opening two matches. They suffered a 1-0 defeat away at Monaco on the opening day, followed by a 2-0 home defeat against Le Havre.

"After this match, the feeling is not pleasant. I think we can do much better than that, defensively as well as offensively," manager Olivier Dall'Oglio said after the loss to Le Havre.

Les Verts are one of three teams yet to find the net in Ligue 1 this season, alongside Angers and Lyon. If the visitors suffer a defeat to Brest without scoring, it would be only the second time in over 15 years that Saint-Étienne would go three games without a goal in the top flight.

A 4-1-4-1 formation, with Ibrahim Sissoko leading the attack, is expected for this clash on Saturday.
