Newcastle in two-horse race for sixth place in season finale.

As Brentford battles Newcastle United in the season finale on Sunday, the Bees aim to climb above 15th-placed Everton, while the Magpies eye a crucial win for European qualification in a must-see midday showdown.

Brentford

Brentford got back to winning ways after last weekend’s 2-1 victory over Bournemouth. Both sides were locked in a stalemate until a stoppage-time goal by Yoane Wissa in the 95th minute secured the win at the Vitality Stadium.

That victory ensured Bournemouth remained unbeaten in four Premier League games against the Cherries (two wins and two draws). The win also gave the Bees 39 points ahead of the final day of the season, where they hope to pick up a win over Newcastle to finish one spot above the 16th place they currently occupy.

Brentford, whose season has not matched their previous campaign, will be counting on title-chasing Arsenal to defeat 15th-placed Everton. This gives them a chance to finish above the Toffees, who sit only one point above the hosts.

The Bees, who finished in 9th place last season, have lost each of their last four Premier League games against Newcastle and could now lose five in a row against the Magpies. A 4-3-3 formation with Wissa, Ivan Toney, and Mbeumo in attack is expected for Sunday’s clash.

Neal Maupay, who missed the Bournemouth match following the birth of his second child, may return. Ben Mee, currently ruled out by injury, penned a new one-year contract on Thursday to remain at the club until the end of next season.

Newcastle United

Seventh-placed Newcastle have a different kind of fight at the other end of the table, following a 3-2 defeat to Manchester United in the midweek round of fixtures. The Magpies are in a two-horse race for sixth place, along with Chelsea, who are three points ahead following a 2-1 win over Brighton on Wednesday.

Newcastle were left with 57 points after Wednesday’s defeat. Sunday’s clash is a must-win for the Magpies, who hope to leapfrog Chelsea by goal difference, assuming they lose to Bournemouth.

They will be riding high on confidence, having won successive Premier League away games against Brentford. Furthermore, Newcastle have only lost their final league game in one of the last nine seasons, going down 3-1 at home to Liverpool in 2019-20.

Eddie Howe’s 4-3-3 will have Isak, Barnes, and Murphy in attack, while Joelinton could get in from the get-go for the first time since January.
