Borussia Dortmund face Leipzig after DFB-Pokal exit.
This Saturday at Signal Iduna Park, Borussia Dortmund desperately seeks redemption against in-form Leipzig, who aim to extend their unbeaten Bundesliga streak and deepen the woes of the struggling Black and Yellow.
Borussia Dortmund
Dortmund have made their worst start to a season in over a decade. The Black and Yellow were denied passage to the DFB-Pokal round of 16 by Wolfsburg after a 1-0 defeat on Tuesday. With this loss, the eight-time Bundesliga champions have now lost their last five away games in all competitions.
In their last league game, Dortmund lost 2-1 to Augsburg at the WWK Arena. Dutch international Donyell Malen gave Dortmund their first away lead in the Bundesliga this season. However, Augsburg turned the game around as Alexis Claude-Maurice scored twice, increasing the pressure on Nuri Şahin’s side.
Dortmund currently sit seventh on the Bundesliga table with 13 points from eight games, seven points behind leaders Bayern Munich and second-placed Leipzig. Despite their struggles, Dortmund are evenly matched in head-to-head meetings against Leipzig, with each team winning eight of their 18 encounters across all competitions.
Recent form against Leipzig is less encouraging for Dortmund, having lost six of their last seven competitive games against them. Their only victory in this timeframe came at home in the Bundesliga during the 2022/23 season.
For the upcoming match, Dortmund are expected to line up in a 4-2-3-1 formation with Serhou Guirassy leading the attack. Manager Şahin will have to manage a lengthy injury list, which includes German forward Karim Adeyemi, and contend with the suspension of Almugera Kabar.
RB Leipzig
Leipzig secured a 4-2 victory over St. Pauli at the Red Bull Arena to advance to the DFB-Pokal round of 16 on Tuesday. Yussuf Poulsen, Christoph Baumgartner, and Antonio Nusa contributed to the scoring for Leipzig.
In league play, Leipzig, currently second in the standings, recently beat Freiburg 3-1. They aim to achieve a fourth consecutive win over Dortmund for the first time.
Managed by Marco Rose, Leipzig remains unbeaten in the Bundesliga along with leaders Bayern Munich. The team has accumulated 20 points from six wins and two draws, trailing Bayern only due to goal difference.
Leipzig will visit Signal Iduna Park, a venue where they have claimed three Bundesliga victories. They aim to extend their impressive run of 19 top-flight matches without defeat, which marks a historic high for the club.
The team is expected to adopt a 3-4-2-1 formation with Benjamin Šeško and Loïs Openda upfront. However, they will likely be without David Raum, Xaver Schlager, Nicolas Seiwald, and Assan Ouédraogo for the upcoming fixture.
