Dortmund in UCL home game against Celtic.

As Borussia Dortmund hosts Celtic F.C. at Westfalenstadion for a thrilling UEFA Champions League clash, both teams look to capitalize on their recent domestic victories and secure crucial points in the race for knockout stage qualification.

Borussia Dortmund

Dortmund atoned for matchday 4’s 'horror show' with a 4-2 comeback league victory over Bochum last weekend. Nuri Şahin’s side fought back from an early two-goal deficit, thanks to a brace from Serhou Guirassy (45’, 75’), an Emre Can penalty (62’), and a late strike from Felix Nmecha (81’). This secured their third win in four games.

"We have to develop in this area, and defending in depth is always a huge topic," Şahin said, despite the win, pointing out his team’s struggles in defence. Dortmund have conceded seven goals in their last two outings. "I hope that we improve as quickly as possible because there's no other way," he added.

Tuesday’s Champions League home game against Celtic presents a big test for Dortmund, with the visitors scoring a massive 16 goals in their last three games. However, the Black and Yellows boast an impressive record against Tuesday’s opponents, winning three of the last four meetings in major European competitions.

Additionally, hosts Dortmund have remained unbeaten in their last 11 home games in the UCL, winning seven of those matches. Having secured a convincing 3-0 victory in their UCL opener against Club Brugge, Dortmund could start with a victory and clean sheet in their first two games of a UCL campaign for the first time since 2018/19.

Currently fifth on the UCL league phase table, Dortmund will aim to secure all three points on Tuesday to improve their chances of finishing among the top eight for automatic entry into the knockout round. Guirassy is expected to start in attack when Şahin lays out the 4-2-3-1 formation.

Celtic

Meanwhile, high-flying Celtic have maintained a 100% record this season, including a convincing 5-1 victory over Slovan Bratislava in their UCL opener. The Bhoys sit third in the UCL standings heading into Tuesday’s clash against Dortmund, where they hope to return as happy travelers.

However, Brendan Rodgers’ side has lost their last five away games in the UCL and are winless in their last eight such matches. Furthermore, the Scottish side has never won a UCL game against German opposition, which adds to their challenge.

Celtic secured a comfortable 6-0 victory over St. Johnstone last time out in the Scottish league and will look to carry this momentum into Tuesday’s match. Nicolas-Gerrit Kühn, Kyogo Furuhashi, and Daizen Maeda are expected to start in attack in a 4-3-3 formation.
