Atlético Madrid take on Valencia in weekend clash.

As Atlético Madrid look to build momentum with back-to-back wins, struggling Valencia aim to break their poor run at Cívitas Metropolitano in this Sunday's La Liga clash.

Atlético Madrid

Atlético secured their first away win of the 2024-2025 La Liga season with a last-gasp 1-0 victory over Athletic Club just before the international break. Just when it appeared Diego Simeone’s side were heading for a second consecutive goalless draw, an error from the Athletic defence presented substitute Alexander Sørloth with the perfect opportunity to set fellow substitute Ángel Correa through on goal.

The Argentine, barely four minutes from his introduction, made no mistake as he rounded the Athletic goalkeeper to slot the ball into an open net on the brink of stoppage time, ending the match in dramatic fashion. "Today we played the game we wanted to play, strong at the back, and those who came off the bench were key, like Sørloth, who made a great recovery to set up Correa's goal," Simeone said after the game.

With the win, Atlético moved up to third place, tied on points with Real Madrid, who have a superior goal difference. Back from a two-week hiatus, the Mattress Makers hope to secure back-to-back victories for the first time this season.

The hosts are unbeaten in their last 13 league games against Valencia, recording nine wins and four draws. They have also kept clean sheets in their last three La Liga matches and could go four league games without conceding for the first time since December 2020.

New signing Conor Gallagher earned his first start for the club last time out and is expected in the starting line-up when Simeone deploys the 3-4-2-1 formation. Sørloth could be back in attack after making an impact off the bench against Athletic.

Valencia

Valencia earned their first point of the campaign after settling for a 1-1 draw against Villareal last time out. The Bats took the lead six minutes from the half-hour mark via Hugo Duro but were pegged back just before halftime.

Despite having the numerical advantage with twenty-two minutes left to play, Rubén Baraja’s men failed to find a second goal despite the extra man. ‘What we saw today should give us hope,’ Baraja said.

Condemned to the bottom of the table with just one point, Valencia will now make the trip to ATL, hoping their return from the international break will bring a change in fortunes. However, the visitors have lost four of their last five league games against the hosts.

A 4-4-2 could be seen this weekend, with Dani Gómez and Sergi Canos in attack. Meanwhile, Rafa Mir is sidelined due to suspension.
