Atletico Madrid hoping to remain in contention for 3rd-place finish.
As Atletico Madrid aim to cement their Champions League dominance with a fifth consecutive victory, they host struggling Osasuna, who are eager to end their winless streak, at the formidable Wanda Metropolitano.
Atlético Madrid
Atletico Madrid picked up four wins in a row [LWWWW] after a 3-0 victory over Getafe on Wednesday, taking them to 73 points [23W, 4D, & 9L]. Antoine Griezmann’s hat-trick [27', 42', 51'] helped the Mattress Makers secure UCL football for a 12th consecutive season. It's now mathematically impossible for fifth-placed Athletic Club [62 points] to catch Atletico with two matches left to play.
However, Atletico can still finish in third place, as they are only two points behind third-placed Girona [75 points]. Diego Simeone's side will host Osasuna on Sunday, hoping to pick up a fifth straight win. The home side has been dominant for several years in meetings with the visitors, winning the last 11 games against Osasuna.
Furthermore, the Mattress Makers have only lost once in the last 20 meetings between both sides and are currently on a seven-match winning streak on home soil against Los Rojillos. With five goals scored in their last three matches while keeping a clean sheet, Atletico Madrid could go four games with four successive shutouts.
Antoine Griezmann and Ángel Correa will be in attack, as seen against Getafe when Atletico lined up in a 3-5-2. Meanwhile, Nahuel Molina is sidelined until the end of May with a hamstring injury, while Vitolo remains unavailable until the end of the season.
Osasuna
Osasuna are now without a win in the last six matches (0W, 2D, & 4L) after settling for a 1-1 draw with Mallorca on Tuesday. Jon Moncayola (14') put Los Rojillos ahead, but Sergi Darder (65') ensured both sides shared the spoils, helping Mallorca restore parity.
The draw left Osasuna with two draws in five games against the Pirates (2W, 2D, 2L) in La Liga. Jagoba Arrasate's side are in 13th place with 41 points (11W, 8D, & 17L). The aim for the rest of the season will be to finish a few places up the table as they head into Sunday's game on the back of consecutive draws (LLLDD).
However, Arrasate must find a solution to his team's defensive woes, having conceded in each of their last six matches. A 4-3-3 formation with Rubén García and Ruben Peña flanking Raul García de Haro in attack is expected against ATL on Sunday. Enrique Barja is ruled out for the season with an ACL injury.
