Atlético Madrid in search of maiden win in first home game.

Atlético Madrid will seek their first win of the season as they host Girona at Cívitas Metropolitano this Sunday, hoping to maintain their record of winning at least one of their first two La Liga fixtures since 2016.

Atlético Madrid

Atlético Madrid began their 2024-2025 season with a 2-2 draw against Villarreal in last weekend’s league opener. A goal-laden first half saw Diego Simeone’s side fight back twice to earn a well-deserved point, courtesy of goals from Marcos Llorente [20'] and new signing Alexander Sørloth [45+5’], who scored his first competitive goal for Atlético against his former team.

‘We played a good game,’ Simeone told reporters after the match. ‘I saw good things and details that make the difference throughout the year,’ he added.

With the draw, the Mattress Makers sit in eighth place going into matchday two, where they welcome Girona as they go in search of a maiden season win. A win against Girona is expected, considering the hosts have won three of the last four meetings [3W, 1D, & 0L], while also scoring at least two goals in each of the last three.

Having drawn on matchday one, Simeone’s side will be aiming to maintain a unique record that has seen them win at least one of their first two fixtures of a La Liga campaign since failing to do so in 2016/17 [0W, 2D, 0L].

Blockbuster signing Julián Álvarez, who made a 15-minute cameo in his debut for the club last time out, could start alongside fellow summer recruit Alexander Sørloth in a 3—5—2 formation. Meanwhile, the club has also welcomed another addition in Conor Gallagher, who made the switch from Chelsea for €42 million.

Girona

Girona are coming off a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Real Betis on matchday one. Míchel’s men found themselves trailing early in the game after a Marc Bartra header in the 5th minute.

However, a perfect debut for new signing Gabriel Misehouy saw the White and Reds rescue a point from the encounter. The 19-year-old came off the bench and restored parity within three minutes.

The draw leaves Girona in 9th place, one spot below this weekend’s opponent, with the same number of points. Having emerged 4-3 winners over Atlético in their last meeting, Girona would be hoping to snatch all three points this weekend when they make the trip to the capital.

However, they have only picked up one win in eight league games against the hosts. Míchel is expected to deploy the familiar 4—2—3—1 formation, with Abel Ruiz in attack. Meanwhile, Manu Vallejo is in doubt for the weekend’s encounter.
