Atletico Madrid back in race for third-place finish as Celta visits.
Atletico Madrid, eyeing a third consecutive win to bolster their top-four finish ambitions, host a Celta Vigo side striving to distance themselves from the relegation zone at the Wanda Metropolitano this Sunday.
Atlético Madrid
Atlético de Madrid remained in 4th place after a 1-0 win over Mallorca, courtesy of an early goal from Rodrigo Riquelme [4']. This victory allowed the Mattress Makers to maintain their six-point lead over Athletic Club, leaving them with 67 points [21W, 4D, & 9L] and four games left to play.
Although it's unlikely, Atlético are still mathematically capable of catching 3rd-placed Barcelona, who are six points ahead with 73 points. Diego Simeone's side, who have won four of their last five games, including the last two [WWLWW], are looking to achieve three consecutive victories when they welcome Celta Vigo to the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium on Sunday.
While the Mattress Makers have struggled on the road, they have shown remarkable form at home. With 15 victories in 17 home games this season, this is their highest number of wins at this stage in a top-flight campaign. Moreover, Atlético are enjoying their best run against Celta Vigo, having not lost in the last 10 La Liga meetings between both sides [7W, 3D, & 0L].
Antoine Griezmann, who was suspended for the last match, will return to join Ángel Correa in attack as Diego Simeone likely fields his preferred 3-5-2 formation on Sunday. Regarding availability, Nahuel Molina Lucero [hamstring] and Vitolo [ACL] are both sidelined with injuries.
Celta de Vigo
Celta Vigo secured a 3-2 win over ten-man Villarreal at the Estadio de Balaídos last Sunday. With the game level at 2-2 in the last ten minutes of normal time, a diving header from Anastasios Douvikas in the 82nd minute secured maximum points for Los Celestes.
Claudio Giráldez's side has won two of their last three matches, which is just one win fewer than in their previous 12 matches in the competition. Los Celestes have 34 points from 8 wins, 10 draws, and 16 losses, and are six points ahead of 18th-placed Cadiz.
Steering further away from the relegation zone is the aim for Celta Vigo when they travel to face ATL on Sunday. However, the visitors have not won an away game against ATL in La Liga since 2007.
Furthermore, Celta have won just one of their last 28 away games against opponents from Comunidad de Madrid in La Liga. A 3-4-3 formation with Iago Aspas and Williot Swedberg on either side of Jørgen Strand Larsen in attack is expected against ATL on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Joseph Aidoo, who is ruled out for the rest of the season with an ACL injury, is the only absentee for Celta Vigo.
