Igor holding out as Marseille face already-relegated Ajaccio in season finale.
In a clash filled with contrasting fortunes, relegated AC Ajaccio aim for a rare double over Olympique de Marseille as they meet on the final day of the season at Stade François Coty.
Ajaccio
Already relegated, Ajaccio remained without a win in any of their last five games after a 3-0 loss to Lens left them with three defeats in a row. Following the loss, they stayed in 19th place with 23 points, their best possible finish being 18th place.
The Bears have as many points as 18th-placed Troyes and hope to leapfrog ESTAC on the final day of the season. However, their recent poor form, failing to score in 13 of their 18 Ligue 1 home games this season, does not inspire confidence ahead of Saturday’s fixture.
Furthermore, after netting just nine goals at home, Ajaccio could become the first team to go 14 home games without scoring in a single season. Nevertheless, they have the chance to secure a top-flight double over Marseille for the second time, having last achieved this in the 2004/05 season.
On Saturday, a 3-4-3 formation featuring Ben Hamed Touré, Riad Nouri, and Cyrille Bayala in attack is expected against Marseille. Meanwhile, Olivier Pantaloni will be without Mickaël Alphonse for this season’s final game.
Olympique Marseille
Marseille were left with back-to-back defeats after a 2-1 loss at Stade Brestois last weekend, despite finding the equalizer at some point. OM have 73 points ahead of the final game of the season and are guaranteed a third-place finish irrespective of the outcome of this fixture.
Marseille will have to go through the UEFA Champions League playoffs for a place in the upcoming edition of the competition, having finished in a UCL qualifying spot. This is a step back, considering OM secured automatic qualification for the Champions League group stage last season after a second-place finish in Ligue 1.
Meanwhile, Les Olympiens are looking to equal their highest tally of points on the road in a single campaign, having picked up 39 points away from home. Igor Tudor is poised to utilize a 3-4-2-1 formation with Vitinha in attack for the season's finale.
According to recent reports, Tudor, who has one year left on his contract, is holding out on signing a new contract offered by Marseille. Juventus are said to be interested in the Croatian, who once worked as an assistant coach for the Old Lady.
