Brighton in mid-table clash against Bournemouth after City defeat.
After ending a three-game winless streak with a midweek victory, Bournemouth will seek to maintain their edge over Brighton in a compelling mid-table clash this Sunday at Dean Court.
AFC Bournemouth
Bournemouth moved three places up the table to 10th place after ending a three-game winless run with a 1-0 win over Wolves on Wednesday.
Antoine Semenyo’s 37th-minute goal secured the victory for the Cherries, even after Milos Kerkez was sent off in the 79th minute. "We deserved to win today, probably earlier. The first 60 or 70 minutes were good," said Andoni Iraola after the match. He also noted the importance of scoring a second goal and the pressure felt after the red card.
This victory marked Bournemouth’s second win in five Premier League games. The Cherries now have 45 points [12W, 9D, & 13L] before Sunday’s clash against Brighton. They aim to remain unbeaten in six Premier League home games after going five without defeat [3W, 2D, 0L].
A victory on Sunday will widen the gap between Bournemouth and Brighton to four points, with Brighton currently just one point behind. Escaping defeat will also equal a record set six years ago, with the last similar unbeaten run seen between May and October 2018.
A 4-2-3-1 formation with top scorer Dominic Solanke in attack is expected. Kerkez’s red card is still under appeal.
Brighton & Hove Albion
Brighton [11W, 11D, & 11L], who were picked apart in a 4-0 loss to Manchester City on Thursday, will be keen to put the result behind them as they look to end a five-game winless run [LDLDL]. "City are one of the best teams in the world, and they played very well. Sorry for the first two goals. The first two goals were unlucky," De Zerbi said after the harrowing defeat.
A trip to Bournemouth could, however, bring more disappointment, with the Seagulls having lost three of their last five Premier League games played on a Sunday [2W, 0D, 3L], one more than they had lost in their previous 18 [10W, 6D, 2L].
However, having won this exact fixture 2-0 last season, the Seagulls could win consecutive league visits to the Cherries for the first time since February 1932. A win will see Brighton leapfrog Bournemouth by two points.
Roberto De Zerbi’s 4—2—3—1 with Danny Welbeck in attack is expected to remain in place despite the embarrassing midweek defeat.
