Spain clinched a memorable victory at the Veltins-Arena, defeating Italy 1-0 in a thrilling Euro 2024 encounter. After a tense and goalless first half, the sole goal came in the 55th minute, courtesy of an own-goal.
This crucial win propels Spain into the round of 16 as Group B winners, alongside host nation Germany. Despite having only one shot on target, Italy owed much to Gianluigi Donnarumma's brilliant goalkeeping and Spain's occasional missteps in front of the goal to keep the scoreline narrow.
Spain's manager, Luis de la Fuente, expressed his admiration for his team's performance, highlighting their potential to challenge top-class teams like Italy. "Italy won the Euros three years ago, and while we were not considered contenders then, it's gratifying to hear people speak of us as potential winners now," he noted.
Italy's boss, Luciano Spalletti, acknowledged the challenges posed by Spain, admitting, "We were constantly stretched, and they caused us more problems than the score suggests." He also cited difficulties in maintaining possession and playing fluid football.
