Manchester United face Chelsea in Super Sunday’s highly anticipated clash.
As Manchester United welcome Chelsea to Old Trafford this Super Sunday, new interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy aims to capitalize on the Red Devils' 11-game unbeaten run against the Blues, setting the stage for a captivating Premier League showdown.
Manchester United
After parting ways with Erik ten Hag following a 2-1 defeat to West Ham, Manchester United is set to face Chelsea in the Super Sunday clash. Interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy led United to a 5-2 victory over Leicester City in the midweek EFL Cup fixtures, securing a December 17 quarterfinal against Spurs.
With the appointment of Rúben Amorim as United's new manager, the club has announced his impending arrival, pending work visa requirements. According to an official statement, Amorim will join until June 2027, with a club option for an additional year.
Despite limited time, van Nistelrooy aims to make the most of his tenure with Chelsea next. With an 11-game unbeaten run against the Blues, United, currently 14th with 11 points, remains hopeful. A 4-2-3-1 formation featuring Joshua Zirkzee is expected, though they'll be without Mason Mount, Harry Maguire, and others.
Chelsea
No one would have thought Chelsea would be vying for top places at this stage of the campaign. However, the Blues are just one point outside the top four.
Although they crashed out of the EFL Cup on Wednesday after a 2-0 loss to Newcastle, Enzo Maresca's side are in fine form in the Premier League, winning three of their last five games [WWDLW]. The London-based club have 17 points [5W, 2D, 2L] ahead of Sunday’s fixture.
With a 4-3 victory in their last game against the Red Devils, Chelsea could win consecutive league games against Manchester United for the first time since March 2011. The Blues have since settled for a 4-2-3-1 formation with Nicolas Jackson in attack, a familiar sight expected against the Red Devils.
Although ruled out with illness, Jadon Sancho is ineligible to face his parent club. "We are looking good," said Enzo Maresca at his pre-match press conference. "The players, they are all available. Except for Jadon, he cannot play anyway," he added.
